Cherry Shaker Oval Boxes #01-#9 |
||||
Cherry boxes are the foundation of our business. Cherry is a beautiful reddish brown colored North American hardwood. It is a hard, dense and close grained wood that comes to life with our traditional hand rubbed oil and wax finish. No stains or dyes are used on any of our boxes, just the color nature provides. As time passes the color deepens markedly as an oxidation process brings it to its full natural beauty. Each piece of lumber derives its color and grain from the particular tree from which it was cut. Soil conditions, rainfall, temperature and competition from surrounding trees all have an impact on the grain and color each tree will reveal in its lumber. This individual charachter is passed on to each box. We carefully sort and choose only the most suitable boards for resawing into box bands, taking all of these variables into consideration. All 17 sizes of our nesting oval boxes are also offered in Birdseye Maple. Lighter in color than Cherry, Birdseye Maple features tightly swirling grain, known as "birds eyes". The amount of figuring varies considerably from tree to tree, board to board and even from one end to the other. Birdseye Maple is far more difficult to carve and to bend than straight grained woods, but the result is well worth the extra effort. Birdseye also darkens with time, maturing to a rich honey amber color. |
