We don't know exactly how Birdseye Maple develops; if it is a hereditary trait or disease which causes the swirling knots or "birdseyes" but the carriers and boxes made from it showcase the beauty of this wood. With time these boxes develop a rich honeyed amber color. Birdseye is fairly rare and very desirable (frequently used in trim on expensive automobiles). It is considerably more expensive than other North American hardwoods and is far more difficult to work due to the tightly swirling grain. As a result, our Birdseye Maple pieces are more expensive than our Cherry pieces. Birdseye Boxes are available in all of our 17 sizes, from our two inch #01 miniature through our twenty four inch long #13.
